Azurite on Mimetite

Azurite on Mimetite

This hand specimen measures 2 3/4 x 4 1/2 x 1 1/2; inches (7 x 11.5 x 4 cm). The azurite occurs as gemmy, purple-blue rhombs, usually with a secondary overgrowth in a rosette habit, less purple and less gemmy, perched on a mat of cream-yellow mimetite. The azurite is mostly on the “front” of the piece, though it does occur on other aspects. The mimetite on the front of the piece is a bit earthy, but on the back and sides grades to translucent and orangish yellow. There is one patch of mimetite that appears to coated with hematite(?). A great looking specimen on the shelf, and for hand lens and photomicrograph work. Non-reactive under UV.
